2019 SPRING SPORTS WINNERS

South Point High School held its 2019 spring sports awards on Thursday, May 23rd. Awards were presented for junior varsity and varsity baseball, varsity softball, ladies varsity soccer, men's golf, men's tennis, and men's and women's track. Also, presented were the following major awards: The Jack Huss Scholar Athlete Award, Male and Female Sportsmanship awards, and the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. Also recognized were those who were named All Conference for the 2019 spring sports season and those recognized as a Southwestern 2A coach of the year, player of the year and NCHSAA 2A State Pole Vault Champion.

The Jack Huss Scholar Athlete Award is presented to a senior who has participated in a least two sports during the past year. The Award winner must have the highest academic average of those who qualified. Jack Huss was a longtime resident of Cramerton, an outstanding athlete and coach and a WWII veteran. This is a very appropriate award to be named for Jack Huss because as a coach, he knew the value of athletics in the lives of our youth, and as a teacher and later principal at Cramerton High School, he also knew the importance of academics in the lives of young athletes to prepare them for the future. The winner of the award this year is Adam Whiteman. Adam has been recognized as a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete. He was a Southwestern 2A All Conference player on the soccer team this past fall and was a Southwestern 2A All Conference distance runner this spring in track, where he qualified for the 2A Mid-West Regional meet, all while maintaining a 4.48 GPA. Adam will be attending NC State University upon graduation.

The Male and Female Sportsmanship Awards are presented to a senior who has participated in at least 2 sports. Those nominated are then voted on by the coaches. This Award expresses much more than physical achievement. It exemplifies and embodies the actions and attitudes of the recipient. To be chosen for this award, the student-athlete has to exhibit the qualities of fairness, courtesy and grace-in winning and in defeat-on and off the field. The recipient must be a person of integrity. To win this award you have to stand apart from the crowd. You have to lead others by your attitude, your hard work and your example. You cannot be like everyone else. You have to realize that, as someone wisely put it, "a man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd."

The winner of the Female Sportsmanship Award is Emma King. She competed on the cross country and soccer teams. She has been described by her coaches and fellow teammates as a hard worker and the consummate team player. She has been a designated a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete and will attend Appalachian State University in the fall.

The winner of the Male Sportsmanship Award is Caleb Gibson. He was a leader on the football and track teams. Coaches and teammates alike describe him as being unselfish and committed to his team. He is always willing to help out and do what is right. He believes in being of service to his community. He will attend Bluefield College this fall where he will play football.

South Point also named its Male and Female Athlete of the Year. The Female Athlete of the Year is Emma King. Emma was an All-Conference runner on the cross country team this fall, where she qualified for the 2A Mid-West Regional meet. This spring she was named to the Southwestern 2A All-Conference team in soccer and helped lead our ladies soccer team to the 4th round of the NCHSAA state playoffs. She is an outstanding young lady and a fierce competitor. She will attend Appalachian State University this fall.

The Male Athlete of the Year is Larry Dowdy. As a four year starter at tackle in football, Larry was selected All Conference and All State while playing in two NCHSAA State Championship football games. He represented North Carolina in the annual Shrine Bowl All Star game this past December. In track, he threw the shot put and discus in helping lead the boys track team to a second straight Southwestern 2A Conference Championship. Larry will be attending Appalachian State University this fall on a football scholarship.
