Newton-Conover 3, South Point 0 — South Point goalie Taylor Shane was put in an awkward position. A teammate passed the ball to him inside the penalty with Newton-Conover senior Francisco Tapia sandwiched in between the two.

The Red Devil forward stole the ball and proceed to head toward the goal when Shane grabbed Tapia’s legs to prevent a possible score. Instead, the senior goalie was given a red card and sent off for the play. Tapia slotted the penalty kick against backup keeper Eli Fermagalich for a 1-0 lead at the 13:46 mark of the first half.

“Yeah, that was obviously a momentum-changer,” South Point coach Scott Tudor said. “I thought we were battling with them. Obviously the game is zero-zero, but not only do you give up a PK and a goal, you lose a man too so that was tough to play. The boys played hard. We held them to 3-0 basically with 10 men, so we’d like to see a different outcome but I’m proud of my guys. They play hard.”

Playing with 10 men for nearly an hour against the top-ranked team in Class 2A proved to be a tough task as the Red Devils defeated the Red Raiders 3-0 on Saturday in the fourth round of the NCHSAA men’s soccer playoffs.

It ended South Point’s deepest playoff run in school history and the Red Raiders’ season at 19-5-1. It marks only the fourth time in history South Point has won 19 or more games; The others came in 1994 (20-1), 1996 (19-1) and last year (19-5-1).

“Even though they were down a man, we knew they could still score. I told the guys this is one of those scores you don’t want 2-0 and they get one, and then all of a sudden they’re flying at us,” Newton-Conover head coach Angelo Palozzi said. “We tried and they held off. The goalie made some good saves on shots right too him but I wouldn’t want to be in front of some of those hard balls that Francisco (Tapia) had. They hung in there, we tried but ultimately our men did a great job.”

The Red Devils, now 26-0-2, will take an 11-game winning streak into a home game against Patton (25-1) for Western N.C. 2A championship game on Tuesday. The Panthers were a 3-2 winner against Ledford Senior in two extra time periods.

“Right now it’s just now keeping the confidence up knowing that it’s not over yet. No one is going to just roll over. Whoever we face on Tuesday is going to be a very good team. Both Patton and Ledford are very good, especially coming down from 3A and they both did well last year,” Palozzi said. “I think we just need to stay composed and we still have a job to do.”

Newton-Conover added a second goal with less than five minutes before halftime, as Brandon Alonso slotted home a goal inside the 18-yard box following a pass from Noel Fong.

The third Red Devils’ goal came from Dilan Esperilla with less than two minutes to play.

Newton-Conover’s defense held strong the entire game limiting the Red Raiders to five shots, eight free kicks, and a lone corner.

“We had a lot of seniors and we’ve won 38 games in the last two years and this is the furthest any South Point men’s soccer team has ever gone,” Tudor said. “We’re extremely happy and pleased. To stand a loss and get knocked out of the playoffs is tough but I try to tell the boys after that they’ve had a great run. There is nothing to hang their heads about. We’re going to keep moving forward.”
