2018 SPRING SPORTS WINNERS

South Point High School held its annual spring sports awards banquet on Tuesday, May 22nd. Awards were presented for junior varsity and varsity baseball, varsity softball, ladies varsity soccer, men's golf, men's tennis, and men's and women's track. Also, presented were the following major awards: The Jack Huss Scholar Athlete Award, Male and Female Sportsmanship awards, the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. Also recognized were those who were named All Conference for the spring sports season and those recognized as Southwestern 2A coaches of the year and players of the year.

The Jack Huss Scholar Athlete Award is presented to a senior who has participated in a least two sports during the past year. The Award winner must have the highest academic average of those who qualified. Jack Huss was a longtime resident of Cramerton, an outstanding athlete and coach and a WWII veteran. This is a very appropriate award to be named for Jack Huss because as a coach, he knew the value of athletics in the lives of our youth, and as a teacher and later principal at Cramerton High School, he also knew the importance of academics in the lives of young athletes to prepare them for the future. The winner of the award this year is Jessica Helton. Jessica has been recognized as a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete. She cheered during the fall and winter season, competed on the swim team, and ran track this spring all while maintaining a 5.345 GPA. Jessica will be attending the University of South Carolina upon graduation.

The Male and Female Sportsmanship Awards are presented to a senior who has participated in at least 2 sports. Those nominated are then voted on by the coaches. This Award expresses much more than physical achievement. It exemplifies and embodies the actions and attitudes of the recipient. To be chosen for this award, the student-athlete has to exhibit the qualities of fairness, courtesy and grace-in winning and in defeat-on and off the field. The recipient must be a person of integrity. To win this award you have to stand apart from the crowd. You have to lead others by your attitude, your hard work and your example. You cannot be like everyone else. You have to realize that, as someone wisely put it, "a man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd."

The winner of the Female Sportsmanship Award is Mikayla Rose. She competed on the cross country and soccer teams. She has been described by her coaches and fellow teammates as a hard worker and the consummate team player. She has been a designated a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete and will attend East Carolina University in the fall.

The winner of the Male Sportsmanship Award is Ben Bogle. He was a leader on the cross country and swim teams. Coaches and teammates alike describe him as being unselfish and committed to his team. He is always willing to help out and do what is right. He will attend North Carolina State University in the fall.

South Point also named its Male and Female Athlete of the Year. The Female Athlete of the Year is Jada Alston. Jada played on the volleyball team for four years and was named team MVP this past season. Additionally, Jada ran track throughout high school and was selected All Conference in the Southwestern 2A Conference this spring. She is an outstanding young lady and a fierce competitor. She plans on attending Central Piedmont Community College upon graduation.

The Male Athlete of the Year is Zach Baker. Zach was selected as the Southwestern 2A Conference Defensive Play of the Year this fall in Men's Soccer. He also received the Best Defender Award for the team. In basketball "Scooch" was again selected All Conference in helping lead his team to a conference regular season championship (a school first for men's basketball). Zach will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall.
